Nike, Inc. headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon, is the largest and most successful brand of shoes, sports equipment and clothing. They controll more than 60% of the market and are becoming a pop culture icon. One might say that the Greek Goddess of Victory for which Nike was named is actually the Goddess of Shoes. Nike may be one of the youngest of the major brands, but it is the dominant brand around the world. In 1963-1964 University of Portland track coach, Bill Bowerman, and Phil Knight, a mid-distance runner joined forces to import and provide low-cost, high tech running shoes from Japan in order to provide alternatives to the German-dominated athletic shoe market. Operating under the name Blue Ribbon Sports, Bowerman and Knight began to sell the Japanese Onitsuke Tiger (now known as ASICS) running shoes. Jeff Johnson, a former rival of Knight, joins the company in 1965 as their first full-time salesperson and sells shoes from the back of his van at local and regional track meets until opening Blue Ribbon Sports’ first retail outlet at 3107 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica California.

Before the Air Jordan, all basketball shoes were white. This simple statement only begins to describe the sheer magnitude of the changes that were about to occur to the sport of basketball and to the athletic footwear industry once Michael Jordan entered the league. Since Michael’s arrival and the launch of the AIR JORDAN franchise, both the game and the industry have been utterly transformed. Each year, a new AIR JORDAN is unveiled. An annual event since its debut in 1985, each unveiling has been met with ever-increasing anticipation from the media, the industry, and the buying public. AIR JORDANs perennially dominate the market in sales and demand, establishing with each year’s model higher benchmark standards in design, innovation and performance for the entire athletic footwear industry. At the heart of the franchise is the perfect synergy between athlete and technology – Michael Jordan, the greatest player in the history of basketball, and the shoes he’s worn throughout his illustrious career that epitomize his relentless dedication to performance, innovation and achievement.

Adidas was founded in 1924 in Germany by two bothers Adi and Rudolf Dassler. The company was first named Dassler shoes and later became Adidas. When the Dassler shoes were seen in the Olympics, it really helped the company get it’s name known. However, in 1948 Rudolf Dassler leaves to start his own company which is now known as Puma. Once Rudolf left his brother, he came up with the famous three stripes logo and changed the name to Adidas.

The logos to the left represent the original and the new logo.

Vans is a sneaker manufacturer based in Southern California. The brand primarily makes skateboarding shoes and other types of sneakers catering towards the extreme sports youth set. Vans was started by Paul Van Doren in 1966, and he opened his first store in Anaheim, California. His business partners were Jim Van Doren, Gordy Lee, and Serge D’Elia. The day they opened the store, they only had displays to show customers their product. The customers had to pick what shoe they wanted. After that, they asked them to come back the next day to pick up their shoes. Thank Goodness we don’t have stores like that today. Vans are known for their popular "Slip On" shoe with the waffle sole, and in 1976, skaters starting skating in Vans. The skaters demanded that the Vans come in multi colorways.
