Dr. Kotabe received his Ph.D. in Marketing and International Business at Michigan State University. Dr. Kotabe teaches international marketing, global sourcing strategy (R&D, manufacturing, and marketing interfaces), and Asian and Latin American business practices at the undergraduate and MBA levels and theories of international business at the Ph.D. level. He has lectured widely at more than 20 business schools around the world. For his research, he has worked closely with leading companies such as AT&T, Kohler, NEC, Nissan, Philips, Sony, and Seven & I Holding Co. (parent of 7-Eleven stores) and international institutions such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization.
Dr. Kotabe has written more than 100 scholarly publications. His research work has appeared in such journals as the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Marketing, Strategic Management Journal, and Academy of Management Journal. He is the recipient of the 1998 S. Tamer Cavusgil Best Paper Award and the 2005 Hans B. Thorelli 5-Year Best Paper Award by the American Marketing Association.

He currently serves as the Editor of the Journal of International Management, and also serves / has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of International Marketing, the Journal of World Business, the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, the Journal of Business Research, and the Thunderbird International Business Review, among others.
In the third issue of Journal of Teaching in International Business in 1997, Dr. Kotabe was ranked the most prolific international marketing researcher in the world in the previous ten years. Dr. Kotabe was elected a Fellow of the Academy of International Business in 1998 and a Fellow of the Japan Academy of International Business Studies in 2017, for his significant contribution to international business research and education. He is the recipient of the 2002 Musser Award for Excellence in Research at Temple University.
