Dr. Joe Mahan joined the Temple Sport Management program in August 2009 after serving on the faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park. He received his Ph.D. in Kinesiology with a Specialization in Sport Marketing and Media from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2008. Dr. Mahan also holds an M.S. in Sport Management from Indiana State University and a B.A. in International Affairs from The George Washington University. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in sport marketing.

Dr. Mahan's research interests lie in the area of sport consumer psychology. He examines social psychological factors related to sport marketing and media phenomena (e.g., promotions, advertising, and sponsorship) by drawing upon theories and constructs from disciplines such as psychology, marketing and communication (mass media). His research appears in a variety of academic journals, including Journal of Sport Management, Journal of Business Research and Personality and Individual Differences. In addition, Dr. Mahan has presented at a variety of national and international academic conferences, including the North American Society for Sport Management, Sport Marketing Association, Society for Consumer Psychology, Consumer Personality Research Conference, and Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
