Avidin-HRP, which binds to endogenous biotin in mitochondrial enzymes, allows one to visualize the location of mitochondria in plastic sections of retina.  As the retina develops, the stain segregates to the boundaries of the layers, and then disappears from all areas of the tissue except the photoreceptors and Muller cell apices.
