BRIEF COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Law W112 – Legal Research & Advocacy. Capstone course for Legal Studies majors, fulfilling college requirement for teamwork and technology, and University writing intensive requirement. A set of current issues, such as gun control, school vouchers, contract fraud, commercial speech provide the substance of this course, which aims to reinforce knowledge gained through the program and to teach process skills: legal research, writing and argument. Second half of course: mock trials.
American Studies H191 – Gambling & Risk in America. Writing intensive Honors course that looks at gambling from several perspectives, including history, statistics, economics, psychology, political science, film, literature, law and ethics. Students write and present a major research project.
Law & Ethics: Advanced Managerial Perspectives . Module for the MBA 2000 program incorporating on-line learning and discussion of ethical dilemmas common to business, while introducing students to fundamental of business law.
Law X093 – Tobacco in America: From Pocahontas to Virginia Slim. Writing intensive Honors course exploring the tobacco industry from the perspectives of history, economics, law, political science, pharmacology, culture & gender studies. Optional experiential component.
Law 802 - Business Ethics, Executive MBA
Case method course applying ethical theory and the experience of managers to the “live” ethical dilemmas they confront. “Hybrid” course, about half face-to-face, half online.
Management515 -Business Ethics, MBA
7 weeks online, using Apreso files and “live” cases as in Law 802 above.
Law W077 - First Amendment: Freedom & Boundaries
Analysis of freedom of speech and its limitations in American society. Covers political speech, commercial speech, defamation, hate speech, obscenity, censorship of the internet.
Law 101 - Contractual Obligations
Upper division course focusing on contract law. Detailed examination of the elements of contract formation, of circumstances which might argue for rescission of a contract, and of the legal remedies in the case of contract breach. Students read law, role‑play cases, and often work in teams for problem-solving and negotiating agreements.
Law C001 - Law & Society
General introduction to the American legal system and its interface with thebusiness community. Students read cases, write case briefs and judicial opinions, role-play mock trials.
Law X091 - Law in Society, Honors
Advanced variant of Law 001. Writing intensive. Students explore the interface between law and contemporary society with less breadth but more depth, using laptop technology to accomplish research and to extend learning beyond class time. Covers such areas as environmental & product safety, whistleblowing, workplace privacy, affirmative action, sexual harassment. Developed as part of the Honors Laptop Community.
