The epithelial lining of the duodenum is internal to the smooth muscle. Smooth muscle is a major component of the intestinal wall. Smooth muscle cells in the outer longitudinal layer are cut in X- section and those in the inner circular layer are cut longitudinally. Between these layers of smooth muscle are blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue elements.
