In the last trimester of pregnancy villus structure villus permits a more efficient exchange of gases & nutrients. Most cytotrophoblastic cells have become incorporated into the syncytiotrophoblastic layer that now covers the villus. The basement membrane of the syncytiotrophoblastic layer fuses with that of the endothelial cells of the fetal capillary, which is now very close to the surface & contains non-nucleated RBCs
