Vagina - Low and Medium Magnifications
The vagina is lined by a stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium overlying connective tissue rich in elastic fibers and thin-walled blood vessels but no glands. Transudate from this lining helps lubricate the vagina. The epithelium thickens and the cells accumulate glycogen under the influence of estrogen. Smooth muscle, connective tissue and nerves are found in the wall of the vagina
