This multilayered epithelium has its basal layer on the basement membrane adjacent to the connective tissue (CT). The pigmented inclusion melanin is most abundant in the lower cuboidal cells. Cells become polyhedral and then flatten as they near the surface. Cells fill with the protein keratin and lose their organelles. Flattened remnants of keratinized cells desquamate at the surface.
