This thick section of ground bone demonstrates several Haversian systems (osteons) in cross section. Each is composed of a central Haversian canal and concentric lamellae of calcified matrix and osteocytes in lacunae. Between osteons are irregularly shaped interstitial lamellae, remnants of former Haversian systems. The black emory material of the grinding wheel fills all the spaces, i.e., canals, canaliculi, and lacunae, making this preparation ideal for study.
