Overview of Cartilage & Bone
- In this lab you will examine the hard connective tissues realizing that like the ordinary connective tissues each is composed of cells, fibers and amorphous ground substance.
- The cells in cartilage are chondrocytes. The fibers can be: 1) collagen Type I in white fibrous cartilage; 2) Type II in hyaline and elastic cartilages or 3) elastic.
- You will differentiate between hyaline, elastic and fibrous cartilages and recognize the layers of the perichondrium.
- The cells of bone are osteocytes. They produce Type I collagen and calcified ground substance. You will also identify osteoclasts, osteoblasts and the layers of the periosteum.
- You will also identify the five zones in the epiphyseal plate seen during endochondral bone formation.
