Seong G. Kong received the B.S. and the M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea in 1982 and 1987, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California in 1991. From 1992 to 2000, he was with Department of Electrical Engineering at Soongsil University, Seoul, Korea as Assistant/Associate Professor. He was chair of the department from 1998 to 2000. He was a visiting researcher at the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH Aachen), Germany in 1997 and 2000. During the years 2000-2001, he was with School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana as visiting scholar. From 2002 to 2007, he was with Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Currently he is Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Temple University in Philadelphia. He has been collaborating with Life Science Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Dr. Kong was Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Systems from 1996 to 1999. He served as Publication Chair of 5th International Fuzzy Systems Association World Congress in 1995, Publication Chair and Organizing Committee of IEEE Conference on Fuzzy Systems in 1999. He is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and an editorial board member of International Journal on Advances in Computational Sciences and Technology. In 2000, Dr. Kong received Award for Academic Excellence from Korea Fuzzy Logic and Intelligent Systems Society. He is listed in the United Who's Who in 2002. He received Professional Development Award from the University of Tennessee in 2004, Best Paper Award from IEEE International Workshop on Object Tracking and Classification beyond the Visible Spectrum, Honorable Mention Paper Award from American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in 2005, and the Most Cited Paper Award for the journal Computer Vision and Image Understanding in 2007 and 2008. In 2006, he was appointed as ASEE/ONR senior summer faculty research fellow at Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. He is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Technical Committee Member of IEEE Computational Intelligence Society. He served as Tennessee Chapter President and is a Councilor of Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA). Dr. Kong has authored more than 100 refereed journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters and gave several invited talks in the research areas of image processing, pattern recognition, and intelligent systems.
