Intro and good first screen sites for home pages

Sites are grouped into topics. Each topic has a list of sites that could not be easily subgrouped. These appear first in the topic section. Other sites in the section are subgrouped whenever possible.

You can click on the button in the upper right corner of a topic page to get back to the Home Page. Also, the button is at the bottom of each topic area. Otherwise, use the arrow keys and page up and page down buttons on your keyboard to move around.

As a general door to everywhere, the Yahoo site has thousands of links to all kinds of sites. Check out the "Cool Sites". The list of sites has an easy to use index. In fact, you may want to use this site as the beginning site that is kicked off each time you start your Web browsing. Click here for instructions on how to do this.

Excite is a major "portal" site. The main page has a lot of links to current news and includes sports info and stock prices. It even has a horoscope. The site can be customized to your specifications.

Go from the Disney folks, has plenty of links and a pleasing design.

HotSheet has a bunch of categories, weather, news, sports, etc., all in one place

NetTop20 has a short list of categories with the top 20 sites in each.

MyYahoo allows you to customize your start page with various news items, weather, stock prices, etc.

Google Home allows you to customize your start page and has a lot of widgets you can add to your home page. You have to sign up for a Google account.

Lycos and Netscape Netcenter want to be the first site that you visit when you start your surfing. They all have a good set of categories which you can search. Lycos can also search for pictures and sounds. All have a few links to news articles on the main page, but these sites are mostly for searching. Galaxy is a smiliar site, subtitled the "professional's source of information", and is intended more for the researcher rather than the surfer.

Other places to start are Microsoft, nbci, About.com which has a collection of sites maintained by an army of 'experts'.

When you start up Netscape, the software goes out into the Web to locate its default document and displays it. You can change this default to any destination that you want. Some folks use the Yahoo home page because it has links to the new and cool sites. Using Netscape:

Visit the page that you want as your default and click on the Edit button in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
On the drop-down menu, click on Preferences.
In the 'Navigator' section, click on the button that says "Use Current Page".
Click on OK.

Using Internet Explorer:

Visit the page that you want as your default and click on the Tools button in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
On the drop-down menu, click on Internet Options.
Click on the button that says "Use Current".
Click on OK.
