Dr. Kenneth J. Soprano, Temple University Vice President for Research & Graduate Studies, Announces Formation of the $1 Million Research Awards Club

As I hope you all know by now, over the past three years, enhancement of research has been and continues to be a top priority of the university administration.  Our goal is to provide a stimulating, supportive environment where research can thrive and grow and where investigators can be successful, externally funded researchers at all stages of their careers.

Since research is a top priority of the university, recognition of those faculty who are particularly successful at obtaining external funding to do research must also be a top priority.  The Provost and I believe that there should be university-wide, public recognition of our highly funded faculty.  For this reason, we are proud to announce the formation of the $1 Million Research Awards Club.  This group is composed of the Temple faculty who are principal investigators of externally funded research grants and contracts which equal or exceed $1,000,000 during the time interval from July 1, 2001 to January 31, 2004.

It is our plan that this group of faculty will also serve as a University-wide Research Advisory Council.  We hope that these individuals will come together and meet as a group several times during the year.  During these meetings we anticipate that they will discuss a wide variety of research-related issues and provide us with ideas and feedback which will serve to guide the university in our future research endeavors.

The following are the Criteria for 2004 $1 Million Research Award Club:  (1)Must be part time, full time, or emeritus faculty of Temple University; (2) Must be principal investigator for research projects representing a combined minimum total of $1 million in external grant awards starting July 1, 2001; (3) Direct and indirect cost amounts will be included in determining eligibility; (4) Research awards received prior to July 1, 2001 will be included in the count by applying the amount of the award budgeted after that date (5) Research awards transferred to Temple with new faculty appointments will be included in the count using the amount of the award budgeted after the date of the Temple appointment; (6)Must have an active grant/contract as of January 31, 2004; (7) No-cost extensions will be considered active grants; (8) Service, training, construction and tobacco settlement formula fund grants/contracts will be excluded in determining eligibility; (9) Clinical trials research, equipment grants, and tobacco settlement non-formula fund grants/contracts will be included in determining eligibility and finally, (10) In the case of clinical trials research, the amount of receipts between July 1, 2001 and January 31, 2004 will be applied.  Eligibility for the club will be reviewed on an annual basis, with membership criteria subject to change.

Temple faculty, who has earned membership in the $1 Million Research Awards Club, will be honored with a gala dinner held at Sugar Loaf Conference Center in Chestnut Hill on Thursday, April 29, 2004.
