Pillar 1
Independence
The role of the resident in Internal Medicine at Temple University
is to serve as primary care provider for patients in the hospital or in the clinic. While
a patient is on the wards or in the Intensive Care Unit, the resident will write daily
notes, write all the orders, and communicate with the family, the
consultants and the staff. All decision making will involve the resident and ultimately
the implementation of the plan will rest with the resident. There is always a faculty
member available to help in the decision making process, but the executive power is in the
hands of the house staff.
Unobtrusive supervision
The faculty members round daily. These doctors have research and
educational duties that go beyond the clinical sphere, but each member of the faculty is
an experienced clinician with a strong interest in providing the best possible care to
patients. Our faculty serve as role models for the house staff by virtue of their
involvement in all aspects of the patient experience as well as their deference to the
residents in the initial formulation of the diagnostic and therapeutic plans. Upper year
residents fulfill a role in between that of intern and faculty with careful supervision of
students and first year residents.
