Biography

Dr. Tedrick has taught at Temple since 1987 and earned the rank of professor in 1993.  He teaches undergraduate and graduate research methods, diversity issues in sport and tourism, aging issues related to travel and sport, and supervises undergraduate interns.  He has helped to guide over 60 dissertations, theses, and projects for graduate students.  Prior to academic life he worked in recreation administration at the local government level.

Primary scholarly and research interests are focused on older adults and the meaning of leisure in their lives.  He is author, co-author, or editor of seven books in the broad topic of leisure and aging.  Leisure and aging:  Ulyssean living in later life with McGuire and Boyd is now in the third edition and is used extensively in courses throughout the country dealing with leisure for aging adults. A recent research project has involved the meaning of Special Olympics for athletes who are moving through adulthood and presentations from this work include the 2005 CP-ISRA World Championships and the 2003 Symposium at the Special Olympics International Games in Ireland.  He has also consulted with many agencies over the years in the areas of adults with intellectual disabilities and their leisure, recreation programs in nursing homes, and management in leisure services.

He has been quite active in service activities within the profession and at the local level. A founding associate editor of Activities, Adaptation & Aging, he also reviews for many journals in the area of leisure and aging.  For a three-year period he a was an associate editor of Therapeutic Recreation Journal.  With NRPA he served on the board of the Leisure and Aging Society.  Locally, he was a Commissioner on the Mayor’s Commission on Services to the Aging for over 15 years in Philadelphia and has been active in Special Olympics as a coach and trainer.  With his partner in the Unified Program he has won medals at the state and regional levels in the Special Olympics golf competition.
