General Program Requirements
Research Commitment - the student must be committed to research
and able to pursue a full-time program of study.
Course work - The student's doctoral program will consist of
five core courses and seven courses beyond the general studies courses
including four
Ph.D. Seminars in Accounting. Information about the curriculum is
available at
http://sbm.temple.edu/phd/curriculum.html
Competency Examination - An assessment of
proficiency in theory and methodology will be made at the end
of the student's first year in the program.
Research Papers Requirement - Students are required to complete
two research papers (one at the end of first year and the second at the
end of the second year) under the supervision of one or more faculty
members (designated as "Graduate Faculty") and present them in the
accounting department's Research Workshop. This provides students with
experience to execute research projects that are usually of publishable
quality.
Research Collaboration with Faculty - The departmental faculty
is very supportive of collaboration with Ph.D. students on research
projects. Some of our recent graduates have had multiple working papers
(usually of publishable quality) before they graduated.
Accounting Research Workshop - Our Ph.D. students are required
to attend the Stanley Merves Seminar Series in Accounting that is usually
held on Fridays. These workshops provide opportunities for the students to
learn about the latest research and to present their work for constructive
feedback. Several internationally known researchers have presented their
research papers in the workshop. Click below for the workshop schedule.

Comprehensive Examination -
Once the course work and research paper requirements are completed,
students are eligible to take the accounting comprehensive examination.
Students must pass the comprehensive examination in (at most) two attempts
in order to continue in the Ph.D. program.
Dissertation - After passing the
comprehensive exam, the student must find a dissertation topic and
successfully defend a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of a
faculty member (designated as "Graduate Faculty").
Residency - The program requires
full-time status. During the course work period this means continuous
enrollment in at least three courses (nine credits) during the fall and
spring semesters while in the program. Full-time employment while enrolled
in the program is not permitted. Teaching -- The student must teach for at
least one semester.
Time Limit - The program, including
the dissertation, must be completed within seven years of admission.
Leaves of absence, which must be approved, do not extend this
requirement.
