Chinese Cinema and Asian Cinema in the Context of Globalization --
The Centennial Celebration of Chinese Cinema and the 2005 Annual Conference of ACSS
Beijing and Shanghai, China,
June 6 -- June 10, 2005
The year 2005 marks the 100-Year Anniversary of the birth of Chinese cinema
To celebrate this special occasion, to re-examine the role of cinema in the formation of Chinese modernity, and to re-define the cinematic experience of Asia in an ever-changing global context, Asian Cinema Studies Society (ACSS) of the United States, Beijing University, and Shanghai University will jointly hold "National, Transnational, and International: Chinese Cinema and Asian Cinema in the Context of Globalization" conference in China.

The conference will be held in Beijing and Shanghai in succession, with the Beijing meeting from June 6 to 7, and the Shanghai meeting from June 9 to 10, 2005.

The prospective presenters and participants are expected to attend both meetings. Immediately after the Shanghai meeting opens the 8th Shanghai International Film Festival (June 11, 2005). Participants of the Shanghai meeting are invited to stay longer for the films and academic forums of the festival.
- While the focus of the Beijing and Shanghai meetings may overlap, the general scope of discussion in Beijing will mainly cover the subjects of Asian cinema, contemporary Chinese cinema, and the film industry of Asia and/or China, whereas the Shanghai meeting will give its priority to the papers that discuss the history of Chinese cinema, particularly that of "Shanghai cinema," Asian cinema, and the interplay of the cinemas of Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

- The conference will invite a few representative figures in the field to serve as keynote speakers. It also warmly welcomes film academicians and professionals from all over the world to participate in this historical event.

- It aims to provide a healthy forum for academicians and professionals with shared interests to meet and interact with each other.

- The keynote speeches and presented papers will be published in book form shortly after the proposed conference.

- The official languages of the conference will be Chinese and English.
In other words, the conference will ONLY provide simultaneous translation between Chinese and English.
