I am Ph.D. Candidate in Mass Media & Communication (MM&C)
at Temple University, where I am also completing a graduate certificate in
Women's Studies. I was previously
a full-time faculty member at
Emmanuel College in Boston, where I taught composition and public speaking courses. I had
also been a project director at Pathfinder Research,
a full-service market research firm, and I have worked in public relations and journalism.
This semester, I am teaching Mass Media and Children, an upper-level seminar in Temple's
Broadcasting, Telecommunications, and Mass Media
department, and Women Today, a Women's Studies
course at West Chester University.
Research questions of interest to me include: How do the stories told on television construct
gender roles? How and why do the media depict strong girls and women? How do viewers draw
upon these depictions in their everyday lives? For my dissertation project, I am studying girls'
television shows whose overarching theme is "girl power." I have been interviewing pre-teen
girls to learn how they negotiate these shows as they develop their identities.
I am a member of the National Women's Studies Association,
where I serve on the Governing Council and as co-chair of the Girls Studies Interest Group;
the International Communication
Association, where I am the graduate student liason to the Feminist Scholarship Division;
and the Temple University Graduate Students' Association,
of which I am co-president.
This web site contains my c.v., with separate sections highlighting my research papers,
industry experience, and the courses I've taught. Feel free to
contact me with any questions you may have.
