Chemistry 82/92;Spring 1998
General Chemistry for Majors and Honors
Schedule, Syllabus, and Comments
Lecture MWF, 11:40 - 12:30 in BE119
Recitation and Laboratory sections are corequisites with the
Lecture Section. Registration for all three is
required.
Instructor: D. Dalton, BE 340, 204-7138,
dalton@sgi.chem.temple.edu, http://astro.ocis.temple.edu/~dalton
Office Hours: MWF 12:30 - 1:30 and other times by
arrangement.
Lecture Text: "Chemical Principles" 2nd Edition, S. S.
Zumdahl, D.
C. Heath & Co.; Boston, MA (1995). There is an optional study guide
available; "Study Guide for Chemical Principles", 2nd Edition, P. B.
Kelter, D. C. Heath & Co, Boston, MA (1995).
This class has been signed up to use the assets of the
ChemPlace. The password is the same as
it was last term. New students joining the class can obtain the password from
D. Dalton. In addition, THIS SYLLABUS and other material which, from
time-to-time, may be important to you can be found here on this
Webpage.
Examinations: There will be two (2) 50 min examinations, four
recitation quizzes, and a final examination (2 hr). The final examination in
this course is scheduled for ...
Grades:>Your grade for this course is determined by
- two 50 min exams @ 200 points each = 400.
- one 2hr final exam @ 400 points = 400
- four recitation quizzes = 200
Homework: Homework problems assigned for the various chapters are
suggested as illustrative of the kinds of questions you should be able to
answer if you understand what was covered in the lecture and the assigned
reading. If you find yourself unable to answer the questions, your
difficulties should be raised as problems in recitation and/or brought to
class. Alternatively, you may bring them to Office Hours. It is very
important that you have attempted to solve the problem or problems
yourself before you seek help since the specific problems on which you
are working will not appear on examinations or quizzes. An understanding
of the type of problem(s) and the general method(s) by which solution(s)
can be found is important. Although it will not be graded, I am willing to
look at homework you choose to turn in. If I find a serious misunderstanding or
mistake, I will note it for you when the paper is returned.
IN-classwork: I anticipate calling upon individual students to answer
question during the semester. Responses help decide borderline grades.
