Kenneth Williamson, "Macroscale and Microscale Organic Experiments", 3rd ed.; D. C. Heath and Company, 1999. Other required supplies include suitable eye protection and a hard-bound notebook.
Laboratory work (experimental and write-ups) will constitute 25%
of the course grade for CHEM 201. An evaluation of "techniques" will also
be included as part of the final grade. ("Technique" will include such
items as being careful to avoid contamination of community reagents,
keeping your work areas clean which includes weighing stations and hood
space, taking proper care of equipment, finishing on time, working
responsibly and independently, improvement of lab skills, etc.)
Lab notebooks will be collected frequently throughout the semester.
Due dates will be announced in ample time. Typically, lab reports are due
the week following completion of the experimental work. One letter grade will be
deducted for EACH day reports are overdue. NO reports will be accepted for
grading after class notebooks have been returned. "Prelab" grading will also
influence the final grade for each report.
Brief "prelab" discussions will be given the previous week. The TENTATIVE experimental schedule appears below:
