Professor Dalton received his B.A. degree with Departmental Honors in Chemistry in 1957 from Northwestern University (R. K. Summerbell) and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1962 from the University of California, Los Angeles (J. B. Hendrickson). After working for the Monsanto Research Corporation in Dayton, Ohio for somewhat over a year he resigned and accepted an instructorship and National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellowship at The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio (M.P.Cava).
In 1965 Professor Dalton came to Temple University as Assistant Professor of Chemistry. Since then, while rising through the ranks to Full Professor, he has held visiting professorships at (1972-1973) Israel Institute of Technology (Technion), Haifa, Israel: (1976-1977) Yale University , New Haven, Connecticut; (1988-1989) Bryn Mawr College , Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and, in 1992, he was The Visiting Master Teacher in Residence, Clemson University , Clemson, South Carolina.
