Guide for Authors
Annals of Tourism Research is a social sciences journal focusing upon academic perspectives on tourism. While striving for a balance of theory and application, Annals is ultimately dedicated to developing theoretical constructs and new approaches which further an understanding of tourism. Its strategies are to invite and encourage offerings from various disciplines; to serve as a forum through which these may interact; and thus to expand the frontiers of knowledge by contributing to the literature on tourism social science.

To perform its role in the development of a theoretically integrated and methodologically enriched multidisciplinary body of knowledge on tourism, Annals invites manuscripts dealing with various aspects of the tourism phenomenon. Papers on anthropological, ecological, political, economic, educational, geographic, historical, psychological, and sociological aspects of tourism (including theoretical essays, case studies, and industry-oriented expositions) may be submitted. Purely descriptive manuscripts which do not contribute to the development of knowledge are not considered suitable.

Style: To expedite the review process, all manuscripts must be prepared according to this format. The submission should be divided into the following sections.

Cover Sheet: It should bear a short informative title (title/subtitle 50 letters maximum). To facilitate blind review, no names or affiliations appear on this sheet.

Title Page: A separate title page, following the coversheet, should include the paper title, all authors' names and affiliations, mailing address for correspondence and page proofs, as well as telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address.

Biographical Note: A short biodata (not exceeding 60 words) about the author(s) appears at the bottom of the title page.

Abstract and Keywords: On the next page, the abstract (between 110-120 words) should state concisely what was done and why, what was found, and what was concluded, and end with a list of keywords pertinent to the central theme. If the paper is accepted for publication, the author will be requested to submit a French résumé of the abstract (or Annals can make arrangements for its translation).

Text: All parts of the manuscript should be typed (on one side of paper only) double spaced, with ample margins. The text should be subdivided with titled headings, preceded by Introduction and succeeded by Conclusions. No footnotes can be included. The paper must be written in the third person.

Abbreviations and Terminologies: Abbreviations or terms should be fully spelled out and defined when first used in the text.

References: In the text, references are cited with parentheses using the author/date style. Examples: (Graburn 1989) or (Dann and Cohen 1991; Smith 1987, 1989). Page numbers for specific points or direct quotations must be given (Graburn 1989:23). The Reference list, placed at the end of the text, must be typed double spaced in alphabetical order of authors:

Dann, Graham, and Erik Cohen

1991 Sociology of Tourism. Annals of Tourism Research 18: 155-169.

Graburn, Nelson H.H.

1989 Tourism: The Sacred Journey. In Hosts and Guest: The Anthropology of Tourism (2nd ed.), Valene Smith, editor, pp. 21-36. Philadelphia PA: University of Pennsylvania Press.

Smith, Stephen L.J.

1987 Regional Analysis of Tourism Resources. Annals of Tourism Research 14:254-273.

1989 Tourism Analysis: A Handbook. London: Longman. For format of other types of publications, please see references in a recent issue of Annals. Please note that citations such as "personal communication" should not be included in the reference list, but may be added parenthetically in the text.

Tables and Illustrations: Each table should be typed on a separate sheet. The data in tables should be presented in columns with nonsignificant decimal places omitted. The tables and figures should be numbered in Arabic numerals, followed by very brief descriptive titles. Important details should be footnoted under each table or figure, not in the title. In the text, all illustrations, charts, and maps should be referred to as Figures. They should be finished drawings (camera-ready, professionally drawn "artworks") not needing further work or typesetting. No tables or figures planned for reproduction can be larger than one page of Annals.

Other: The preferred length of an article is 20-35 typewritten pages (about 5,000-9,000 words). The manuscript should be arranged/formatted as follows: cover sheet, title page, abstract, text (divided into introduction, subdivided discussion, and conclusions) acknowledgements, references, submission dates, and tables and figures. All submissions must be in English. Translated papers should be accompanied by a copy of the article in the original language.

Evaluation: Annals is a refereed journal. All manuscripts are evaluated by at least three referees from different disciplines. The evaluation is done anonymously (double blind system): communicating via a Coordinating Editor, neither referees nor the authors are aware of each other's identities.

Copyright and Originality: It is a condition of publication that manuscripts submitted to Annals have not been published and will not be simultaneously submitted or published elsewhere. All authors must sign the Transfer of Copyright agreement, available from the Editor-in-chief or the Coordinating Editor, before the article can be published. (U.S. government officers or employees whose submitted work was prepared as part of their employment are exempt from the transfer requirement, but must certify their status as government writers.) This transfer agreement enables the publisher to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights or rights to use their work as they please in the future. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microform or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations.

Computer Disks: In order to speed publication and ensure accuracy, authors of accepted papers are requested to submit a computer disk (3.50" or 5.25" HD/DD disk) containing the final version of the paper along with the final manuscript to the editorial office. Please observe the following criteria:

1. Send only hard copy when first submitting your paper. 2. When your paper has been refereed, revised if necessary and accepted, send a disk containing the final version with the final hard copy. Make sure that the disk and hard copy match exactly. 3. Specify what software was used, including which release (e.g., WordPerfect 6.0). 4. Specify what computer was used (either IBM compatible PC or Apple Macintosh). 5. Include both the text file and ASCII file, and separate table and illustration files, if available. 6. The file should follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference format of this journal. 7. The file should be single-spaced and should use the wrap-around end-of-line feature (i.e., no returns at the end of each line). All textual elements should begin flush left, with no paragraph indents. Place two returns after every element such as title, headings, paragraphs, figure and table callouts, etc. 8. Keep a backup disk for reference and safety.

Commentary and Rejoinders, Research Notes and Reports, Book Reviews, Film Reviews: Annals also solicits submission to these Departments. While the above general format applies, for length and other specifics, prospective contributors are asked to contact the respective Associate Editor.

Manuscript Submissions: Please send all manuscripts (5 copies) directly to J. Jafari, Editor-in-Chief, Annals of Tourism Research, Department of Hospitality and Tourism, University of Wisconsin-Stout, Menomonie WI 54751, USA.
