Course Description
THM 100 is a career orientation course designed for those students who may decide to enter a career in sport, recreation, tourism, and hospitality (SRTH) fields. This course is an overview course that will introduce the student to many career avenues that can be pursued within these fields. Thus, students will be able to survey these fields in order to position themselves for their junior and senior internships, and also for eventual career positions upon graduation from Temple University.
There are four sections of THM 100 rotating among four different classrooms throughout this semester. Each rotation exposes students to a particular component of the SRTH industries. This rotation focuses on the hospitality component of THM 100. Students are scheduled to rotate and experience other three components with specialized instructors during the semester.
Course Objectives
In particular, the course has the following objectives and your current class concentrates on the hospitality component of SRTH:
- Acquire an introductory knowledge on the various segments and their interrelation within the SRTH industries in order to select an area with which to work in future careers.
- Become familiar with the variety of employment options that are available to an individual who has chosen to pursue a career in SRTH fields.
- Obtain an appreciation for the job skills, work experience, and requirements that employers value in many SRTH segments.
- Describe various national and regional organizations that support the SRTH industries.
- Understand the role of information technology and its affects on the SRTH industries.
