Rhodes design 640

36' x 25' x 9'6" x 5' cutter WINDWARD for Aubrey King of Baltimore -- 1927

In this design Rhodes created what was to become his hallmark profile, with a gorgeous sheer and  moderate, balanced overhangs.  The profile hardly changed in his designs for the next 40 years. At least three sisterships were built to this design.

The original 1928 sketch for design 640 clearly  shows the gorgeous sheer line and moderate, balanced ends that characterize Rhodes' boats for the next 40+ years.
This handsome sistership was built in Chicago in 1937.  She has had many names, now MYSTRAL.

Comparing the Rigs:

The original cutter rig features a longer boom and bowsprit, keeping the sail area low. The staysail is drawn with lazyjacks, and was designed for Chesapeake Bay's summer thunder squalls.  The jib had a roller furler.

In 1950 the Rhodes office re-designed the rig with a shorter boom and masthead jib for increased sail area.

In MYSTRAL, the rig is a little different.  The mast is further aft, and it has a much shorter boom.  A large mast head jib makes up for the smaller mainsail. The mast is about the same height.
