keel and centerboard versions The Rhodes 29 (design # 632)
is an adaptation of the Rhodes 27, a classic and characteristic narrow
hull design and full keel. The first boat of this 1955 design was
Altair. About 11 of these boats were built.
In addition, a centerboard version of this boat was designed (design #633) , with the same overall and waterline length, but with a beam of 11'3" and a draft of 4'7". At least 8 were built. Some were rigged as sloops, others as yawls, both mast head and fractional foretrianges.

Whisper, a Rhodes 29 of the narrow form. She was built in 1960 at the Matthiesen & Paulson yard in Arnis-Schlei by Schlezwig Holstein in West Germany. Whisper was actively raced on the Great Lakes when she was new, and now sails out of San Diego. The auxiliary power is a Westerbeke 4-107 diesel, 50 hp. with a solid two-blade propeller. She is built with double-planked African Mahogany on oak frames, bronze fastened; with bronze knees, floors, strapping, overhead arch, and massive mast support in the bilge. The screws are lined up parallel in patterns according to Lloyds specs for that period. Since her inception, she has always had varnished topsides, cabin trunk and cockpit combing.

The first boat in the centerboard version of the Rhodes 29 was Erewhon. The design attracted much attention, and Rhodes sold the design twelve times. Not all were built, but most were. We have photos below of Erewhon and 3 sisterships: Erewhon
Erewhon Erewhon now sails out of North Cape Yacht Club in LaSalle, Michigan, on the western side of Lake Erie.
Thor, (Sistership 1)
.Since these photos, she
has been restored beautifully and is now white.
Fair Winds (Sistership 3) Fair Winds is in reasonable
condition and races regularly on the Australian East Coast. We are based
in Melbourne but last year sailed 1500nm to Queensland to sail in the inaugrial
Classic Division at Hamilton Island Race week. Although originally
designed as a yawl, she clearly is a sloop now. Restoration plans include
re-fitting a mizzen mast. <mark@blueboat.com.au>
Alba (previously Honey
Sistership
4) is a Rhodes 29 yawl with a center board, built in 1956 by Abeking Rasmussen.
She is in inmaculate original condition: Same rig, same winches, masts
and interiors. I believe you would be interested in looking at these two
photos, made 15 days ago in Mallorca, during the "Conde De Barcelona Regattas,"
for classic boats. In addition to winning second place in our class,
we got the Hispania Tropphee for the most aurthentic boat, and another
for the best maintained ship. ALBA will be located at the yachting
club of Monaco, although sometimes, as now, for instance, she is the Calpe
marina (Alicante-SPAIN). If you are interested, I can send to you
drawings as well as other photos. Saludos.
