Narwhal is a very successful Rhodes ocean racer from 1930. She was originally built for the owner of Minneford ship yard on City Island. In the 1930's she raced a lot and did very well. From 1935 to 1937, she was owned by Donald Starr, who had just recently returned from a circumnavigation. She sank in the 1938 hurricane and sold to the Hood family. They started racing her with some early synthetic sails and went on to start a giant sail making business. She now sails out of Great Kills, Staten Island, New York, and still surprises other boats with her speed. Her owner reports, She is still a good sailing boat and we will probably race her once this year during the Yacht club's fall series. We have not raced for a several years. We have kept her ship shape, but the yacht like finish has faded. People who come out on her are always impressed by the solid, comfortable way she handles the sea.. |
