| KIRAWAN (designed 1935)
and HOTHER (designed 1938) were commissioned to be built by the same
man, Robert Baruch, of New York. KIRAWAN was built by Jakobson and
Peterson in Brooklyn NY, just in time for the 1936 Bermuda Race, for which
she had been specifically designed. She won the race, in heavy winds
winds. Rhodes was aboad and reassured the skipper that she could
be driven hard into the wind and seas.
KIRAWAN was subsequently owned by the actress and wife of Howard Hughes, Terry Moore. Kirawan eventually moved to California, and in 1993 the film producer Sandy Horowitz purchased her and began an extensive refit under the direction of Tom Adams, a sailor and woodworker. Now, with a rebuilt interior, hand-cut marble counters and even a rolltop desk, Kirawan is a work of art. KIRAWAN competed again in
the 2000 Bermuda Race, but did not do so well in a race that favored smaller
boats.
