Rhodes developed this lovely
28'6" sloop in 1934, calling it the Trident Class. With five
windows and a short bowsprit, she offers a distinctive profile. Her
interior accomodates three in comfort, with a full, proper galley and head.
In 1939, Bico Malo
was built to this design in Havana, Cuba. She won a showcase of silverware
in Miami-Naussau and St Pete-Havana races. Bico Malo was purchased
by an American, renamed Cubana reflecting her origin, and taken
to Southern California, where she continued to win races and sail in comfort,
like a much bigger boat.
In 1956, a sistership, pictured
on the left, was built in Tacoma in 1956. Over the years, she
has raced and cruised under several names -- Pinnochio, Louie, and
Dragon Bait. As she was restored to near-original condition, she was
given the name of the earlier, famous sistership, Cubana.
