Jane Dore III was the original boat built from design 499 in 1945, but two years latter, the design was revised with a larger sail plan (shown above) and eventually a centerboard for Merry Maiden. Merry Maiden was very successful. She won her class in the 1950 Bermuda Race. In the Monhegan Island Race of 1951 and of 1953, she won her class in heavy weather and light air conditions. At the same time, she was a comfortable cruiser with a private aft cabin, with the entrance in the rear so that spray would not enter from the front of the boat. She had sheets led to the cockpit for single handing, a practical place for the dinghy on the aft deck, and a davit to help with the anchor. She made two circumnavigations. Merry Maiden has her
own website, and is being restored at the Center
for Wooden Boats in Seattle.
