Temple University's undergraduate Asian Studies major and minor offer students a broad orientation to the study of Asia. A foundation in a selected geographic area or subject matter is coupled with the opportunity to tailor the program to each student's specific interests and professional objectives. Substantial study of an Asian language is required. Most of our classes are small and are taught by professors who are steeped in the culture and language of at least part of Asia. A typical class will have students from the Philadelphia region, Japan, Korea, and American students back from study abroad. Students are encouraged to study abroad for one or two semesters, so they can consolidate their Asian language skills and become comfortable living in an Asian cultural environment. Temple University has a campus in Tokyo, which gives students an especially convenient way to study in Japan. For students interested in other regions of Asia, the International Programs office can help locating suitable academic environments. Because the program is very flexible, students work closely with a faculty advisor to ensure selection of a suitable program within the framework of the requirements for the major or minor. Any of the listed Asian Studies Faculty members may serve as an Asian Studies Advisor. The educational objectives of the program are to give students competencies and skills in Asian Studies and of more general applicability. A separate web page lists our educational goals. This program does not offer a graduate degree, but various departments offer some graduate courses. Check with the respective departments about their course offerings. Students interested in Asian American studies should check the courses and programs in Asian American Studies. |
