Requirements for Major

 
Asian Studies Requirements for Major: (30 s.h.)

1) Two "Asian Studies Foundation Courses" (6 s.h.) required of all majors, selected from:
  a) AS 115-Intro to East Asia: China
  b) AS 116-Intro to East Asia: Japan
  c) AS C086-East and South Asia
  d) AS C084-China-Japan Through Lit
  e) The equivalent of the above courses, (which may incorporate the study of South or Southeast Asia), as approved by the Asian Studies advisor.

2) Seminar in Asian Studies A.S. W300 (3 s.h.)

3) Seven additional courses (21 s.h.) to be selected by the student in consultation with the Asian Studies advisor.  The elective couses should include courses cross-listed in at least three disciplines.  One of the seven elective courses may have predominantly Asian-American content.

The student's program must be designed with a coherent geographical and/or subject matter focus, following the advice, and subject to the approval, of the Asian Studies advisor.

4) Language: Students must complete the 4th semester level of Chinese (CL 167), Japanese (CL 171), Korean (CL 173), or Hindi (CL 161) or the equivalent with a grade of C- or above. The language requirement may also be satisfied by examination of oral/aural and reading skills in any Asian language approved by the student's Asian Studies advisor.

Students graduate "with distinction" if their GPA in their Asian Studies courses is over 3.5 and their overall, cumulative GPA is over 3.0.

University and College Requirements

The Asian Studies Major is a Bachelor of Arts degree within the College of Liberal Arts. Students must meet all of the University Core curriculum requirements requirments and the requirements for graduation of any of the colleges at Temple University, as well as the Asian Studies requirements for the major.
