Majoring in Asian Studies helps prepare students for careers that interface in some way between Asia and the United States and other countries. In many cases, the Asian Studies major gives students a real edge in the job market because they have multi-cultural and language skills increasingly needed in today's inter-linked world. Sometimes our graduates of non-Asian heritage will seek additional training and/or studies before entering the labor market. Excellent strategies include seeking employment or further study in Asia after graduation, to improve language ability and cultural sensitivity. One of our recent graduates found a position in Seoul Korea, helping the city government make its web site. He later found an exciting job in business. Teaching English is, of course, an excellent way to live in Asia, improve linguistic skills, and learn more about the culture. After a year or two, students are in strong positions to find jobs in the private sector or to seek more specialized training in law, business, graduate school, etc. Many of our graduates come originally from Japan and entered Temple University through Temple University Japan. They have been successful in finding positions with Japanese and American companies that are involved in trade or other international exchanges. One of our Japanese graduates is working in the Philadelphia region with an import/export company, exporting U.S. fashions to Japan. Needless to say, getting a job is not easy and automatic. Students need to treat getting a job as a serious job, and must be persistent and patient. Seeking internships is an excellent strategy. The university has a Career
Development Services Office, which can assist students locate potential
employers. In addition, Asian Studies faculty can help students brainstorm
for ideas and can write letters of ecommendation. Ultimately, however,
students must sell themselves to prospective employers.
