| Computing with Asian Language Software

Asian Language (Chinese-Japanese-Korean) software at Temple's
computing centers:
1. Paley Library Scholars Information Center
Capabilities: UnionWay AsianSuite 97
Viewing web pages in Chinese-Japanese-Korean.
Word processing in Chinese-Japanese-Korean, including
printing.
Text to speech in Chinese and Japanese. (not yet
activated)
Bring your own "walkman"
earphones and plug them in.
Location:
Computers 71, 82-87
(A little forward and to the left from the
entrance of the Scholars Information Center.)
To Access Programs:
- Go to Start, Programs
- Highlight UnionWay
- Click on Asian Suite 97 key icon
- The UnionWay tool bar will appear. (You
can drag it around and minimize it.)
-The first button lets you choose Chinese, Japanese,
or Korean
- Open the Windows application you wish to use (e.g..
Word or Netscape)
- For CHINESE:
Select Chinese characters (Big5 or GB). Do not switch style in
the middle of a document.
Select input method (IME). Default is English method input.
ZhuYin - Chinese phonemes
PinYin - input alpha data
for phonemes
English to Chinese - input
English words, look for Chinese translation
CangJie
Cantonese PinYin
Symbol Input
Select the proper character. Point and click with the mouse,
or press its corresponding Function key or Numeric key to send character
to application.
- For JAPANESE:
Select
Japanese (S-JIS)
Select
Japanese input method.
When proper character is displayed, press ENTER to send character to
application.
- For KOREAN
Select
KSC
Select
Korean Input method.
Hangul Input Method - input Korean alphabet
KSC Input Method - input hexadecimal number.
When proper character is displayed, press the SPACE BAR to send character
to application
Please note: The above instructions are very simplified and superficial.
The software is much more complex, utilizing tones and full sentences.
Please consult the full documentation to the full advantage of the software.

Mac computers labeled G3 (using OS 8.5 or above).

Aisles 6-7-8 (last rows to the right).
Technique:
Use Netscape, not International Explorer
Adjust to desired character set via Menu: View,
Character Set
You can or may have to adjust character set by clicking
on the flag in the upper right
