Off-Campus Issues
Off-Campus Safety
It is important that students feel safe as they venture off of Temple’s Main Campus. Captain Eileen Bradley and Oscar Chow have done a great job in increasing officer patrols, increasing the number of emergency stations, re-designing the Owl Loop transportation system, and responding to incidents as they occur. Owl Evolution has already developed a healthy relationship with Campus Safety and will continue to work closely with them to ensure safety on our campus.
TU Lease Protection
Among Owl Evolution’s primary concerns are the students who have been forced to move off-campus due to a lack of housing space. While there isn’t much we can do to provide more housing, we do have plans to better assist students in such a huge transition. The TU lease protection for students is also an idea that is currently used by other major Universities. The lease protection plan must be adopted by Temple and will ensure students that their landlord must abide by a Temple housing standard or else the lease will be terminated. Our plan will most certainly have an impact on how surrounding landlords treat Temple students.
Student Rates for Cable and Internet
In a continued effort to assist students in the off-campus housing transition, we have plans that will allow Temple students in the immediate Main Campus area to receive student discounts on cable and internet access from their local provider. Although this plan may take some time to implement, it is certainly a possibility and something that we will continually work on.
Parking Options, Inconsistent Parking Enforcement
We recognize that parking on campus is a huge head-ache for all Temple students. While there isn’t much we can do to create more parking spaces, we can improve upon the current system we have now. One of the ways to do that is to finally fix the inconsistent parking rules on campus. Students never know when it is okay to park at certain locations and as a result, almost everyone ends up with a parking ticket at some time or another. Owl Evolution would also like to establish a parking plan where students can have parking access to multiple campuses under one plan. Thus eliminating separate payments during the same day for parking at different campuses.
Strengthen Inter-Campus Communication
After having talks with various students from Tyler, Health Science, Podiatry, and Ambler, the consensus is that students at satellite campuses feel disconnected from Main Campus, and the lack of communication has reached a point where people do not even know what is going on in the different campuses.
Housing and Facility Conditions at Tyler: Approximately a month before spring break there was a collapse in one of the sculpture buildings in Tyler, and the residence halls at Tyler are in a decaying state. The lack of communication, in which even administrators on Main did not know what was going on, is upsetting. We will strongly advocate for better conditions at Tyler for next year.
Housing and Facility Conditions at Ambler: After visiting the Ambler campus and speaking with the residents there, it has come to our attention that they receive a lower quality in housing facilities. There is no reason why Ambler should have to deal with broken bathroom fixtures and old furnishings if they pay the same rates as students on Main Campus. This is something we plan to fix immediately.
Rent-Payment Options for Students Living Off-Campus
One of the biggest projects that Owl Evolution is undertaking is actually a goal of current TSG President Oscar Chow. Once completed, this project will make it possible for students forced to move off-campus to bill their rent as an added cost of tuition. Owl Evolution and Oscar Chow plan to implement this new payment system at the surrounding large housing developments. Our project will give students the option to pay rent monthly or add the cost of rent to their bill and financial aid package. By doing so, we hope to assist students in a way that will allow them to work less hours and spend more time focusing on their academics while enjoying the University experience.
