IMANI WINDS - wind quintet

IMANI WINDS - wind quintet
Friday, OCTOBER 22nd at 8:00 P.M.

Featuring five outstanding musicians of African-American and Latin Heritage, the members of Imani Winds joined forces in 1997 to create an ensemble that would push the boundaries of a traditional wind quintet. The name Imani - "faith" in Swahili - is the embodiment of the ensemble's mission: to bridge European and African heritage musical traditions, and to explore repertoire from diverse cultural backgrounds. This reflects the members rich experiences and backgrounds as classical musicians of color.

The Philadelphia concert will include the following works:
Kleine Kammermusik für fünf Blaser - by Paul Hindemith
Sextet for Winds and Piano - by Gunther Schuller (with Gill Kalish on piano)
Sextet for Winds and Piano - by Francis Poulenc (with Gill Kalish on piano)
Titlayo - Jeff Scott (composer and member of Imani)
La Nouvelle Orleans - Lalo Schifrin
Steal Away - arr. Valerie Coleman (composer and member of Imani)
