Objective:

With the explosion of computer technology, knowledge of computing applications as tools for all disciplines has become a necessary asset. This course will introduce the student to understanding the components of a computer system; the use of the computer to process information; the technology behind computers and networks and how this technology is likely to change. The laboratory portion of this class will provide students with hands-on experience to supplement the lecture material. Operating system concepts, a working knowledge of collaborative software and the following applications are covered: advanced features of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation software and the resources of the Internet including developing a web site using sound design techniques to publish course documents and incorporating multi-media components.

  • at least 256 MB USB drive (go with 1 GB)

4 Quizzes:                               30 points each total of 120 points

Midterm:                                                                     100 points

PowerPoint Presentation:                                          40 points

Participation:                                                              10 points

Lab:                                                                              165 points

Total possible:                                                           535 points

There are a total of 165 points available in the lab.  That includes assignments, quizzes, and the lab exam.  You must get at least 100 points in the lab to pass CIS 1055, regardless of the grade you get in the lecture, NO EXCEPTIONS!!

 

Your grade will be computed by: (total points received) / 535

 

Letter grades will be assigned as follows:

A     92 -100

B      82 - 87

C     72 - 77

F    0 -59

A-   90 - 91

B-     80 - 81

C-    70 - 71

 

B+   88 - 89

C+    78 - 79

D     60 - 69

 

 

The Fine Print

Absolutely no derogatory terminology will be tolerated in this class.  This is a zero tolerance policy!!!

 

Do not cheat in this class.  I take this very seriously as does the university!!  This includes plagiarism.  If you quote someone else’s material, you MUST cite it properly. 

 

When sending email, put course and section in the subject line and you name in the body of the email!  Otherwise, it will not be answered!

 

It is rude to talk while someone else is talking, so don’t do it.  Respect your classmates!!

 

All cell phones must be off or set to vibrate.  Do not answer calls during class!!

 

There will be NO make up homeworks or tests.

 

Class participation can and will have an affect on your final grade.

 

It is your responsibility to read the assigned material before coming to class.  It is also your responsibility to do the assignments by the date that they are due.
