| HOW
DOES THE 3Rs PROCESS WORK?
Consider this testimony from
a California educator:
Finding Common Ground
During the fall of 1990, the district administrative
staff attended a workshop sponsored by the San Bernardino County Schools
office which helped lay the foundation for the entire district's
approach to controversial issues for that year and up to the present.
The speaker was Dr. Charles C. Haynes, a leading authority on religious
liberty issues in public education. Although we were only initially
looking for strategies to prepare us for upcoming discussions on the
inclusion of religion in the social studies textbooks, we came away with
far more. Dr. Haynes focused his attention (and ours) on how to find
common ground amidst diverse opinions and beliefs by a return to
the guiding principles of the First Amendment the "three Rs" of religious
liberty rights, responsibility and respect. Within this philosophical
framework, each voice, even the dissenting voice, has a right to
be heard and respected, and the path for finding the common good
begins the acknowledgment that what divides us is often deeper that
what unites us. Educators must commit ourselves to trust-building
and respectful dialogue with all of the major players in the community
and to decision-making by consensus agreement.
