Second Annual Francis Johnson Tribute, a pioneer African-American composer and bandmaster whose prolific output exceeded 300 pieces. He was born in 1792 in Philadelphia.

HANNIBAL LOKUMBE, composer

Grammy-nominated composer Hannibal Lokumbe will lead a teachers' workshop and conversation about his new work, A Shepherd Among Us, commemorating the life of priest and activist Fr. Paul Washington.  The workshop focus will be upon writing music and creativity.  Choir directors, music teachers, and music lovers are invited.  Space is limited! Registration is required.  Sponsored by Art Sanctuary.

IMANI WINDS, wind quintet

Their fifth return visit to Philadelphia, classical music's award winning Imani Winds will perform a World Premiere of CANE, a commissioned work by composer and jazz pianist Jason Moran.  CANE is a musical portrait of Moran’s Louisiana bayou ancestry dating back to his great grand-aunt Marie CoinCoin, an ex-slave, who opened a plantation and bought her family's freedom.

The New York premiere will be March 8th, 2009 at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Auditorium.

Concert Program: Ten pieces for wind quintet by Gyorgy Ligeti; speech. and canzone by Valerie Coleman; CANE by Jason Moran; Terra Incognita by Wayne Shorter; Contrabajissimo by Astor Piazzolla arr. Scott.

HANNIBAL LOKUMBE, composer

A premiere performance of Hannibal’s A Shepherd Among Us, a work for mass choir with jazz ensemble. This new work commemorates the life and work of Church of the Advocate’s legendary activist and priest, Father Paul M. Washington.  A Shepherd Among Us based on his autobiography Other Sheep I Have.

Guest performers include the Clayton White Singers, the Creative and Performing Arts High School choir, with guest conductor Donald Dumpson.   An artists and audience reception follows the performance. 

This program is part of Art Sanctuary’s 10th Year Anniversary Gala celebration.

The general community performance will be Saturday, November 15th.
