FRANCIS JOHNSON, composer and bandmaster.

Second Annual Francis Johnson Tribute, a pioneer African-American composer and bandmaster whose prolific output exceeded 300 pieces. He was born in 1792 in Philadelphia.

IMANI WINDS, wind quintet

Their fifth return visit to Philadelphia, classical music's award winning Imani Winds will perform a World Premiere of CANE, a commissioned work by composer and jazz pianist Jason Moran.  CANE is a musical portrait of Moran’s Louisiana bayou ancestry dating back to his great grand-aunt Marie CoinCoin, an ex-slave, who opened a plantation and bought her family's freedom.

The New York premiere will be March 8th, 2009 at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Auditorium.

Concert Program: Ten pieces for wind quintet by Gyorgy Ligeti; speech. and canzone by Valerie Coleman; CANE by Jason Moran; Terra Incognita by Wayne Shorter; Contrabajissimo by Astor Piazzolla arr. Scott.
