 1807 & Friends

A Brief Overview of our Concert

November 10, 2008

“Tango and Fandango”

Glazunov Alla Spagnuola, from “Five Novelettes”

Piazzolla Adios Nonino, for violin and guitar

Four Tangos:

Villoldo El Choclo

Krantz Tango Noir (World Premiere)

Gade Tango Jalousie

Gardel Por una Cabeza

Granados Danza Española

Boccherini Quintet for guitar and strings (“Fandango”)

One of our most attractive program formats returns along with the debut of our latest audio CD featuring the Wister Quartet playing four Tangos and two major string quartets. Glazunov’s attractive little character piece opens this concert with an outsider’s glimpse of the flavor of Spain, followed by Astor Piazzolla’s touching tribute to his father.

Three of the Tangos are well known and are featured on our CD; the fourth shows Allen Krantz’s darker view of the dance in a new work written for the Wister Quartet. Granados’ charming and lively dance follows, and the finale to this concert is Boccherini’s “Fandango” quintet, one of our all-time favorites featuring virtuoso cello riffs and tambourine and castanet cameo appearances in this personality-filled work.
