A Brief History of 1807 & Friends |
||
|
1807 & Friends derives its name from a Philadelphia house address, 1807 Sansom Street. It is here that professional musicians, including members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, gathered for the sheer joy of making music. For approximately forty years, informal chamber music sessions often lasted late into the night and provided the musicians an opportunity to reaffirm musical values. After many years, "Friends" urged the musicians to share the "1807" experience with the public. In 1981, following its first public performance, the audience greeted the performers with a standing ovation. Thus encouraged, 1807 & Friends was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in August of 1981 and inaugurated its first subscription concert series. Over the years, the subscription concerts have consistently earned high critical praise. Following long tenures as ensemble-in-residence at both the Gershman Y and The University of the Arts, 1807 & Friends now continues to perform at the Academy of Vocal Arts, located at 1920 Spruce Street. In this marvelous setting and listening space, the community is afforded an opportunity to hear the great works of chamber music - performed at the highest level. In the spirit of an ongoing musical tradition, new Friends are always welcome. Come and listen! |
